Here's how to replace it and stop the damage spreading.Nobody thinks about the battery box until the day a battery drops through the bottom of it. It's a steel box bolted to the side of the bus, it holds two or three heavy batteries, and it spends its whole life venting acid at its own sheet metal. That's why it's usually one of the first body parts to rot through, and why the wall right behind it is often just as bad.Why it goes firstFlooded batteries give off a fine acid mist, worst of all while they're charging. Inside a closed box that mist settles on the floor and walls and never really dries. Add road salt off the wheels and a little water sneaking past the cover and you've got a sealed rust chamber bolted to the bus. The floor of the box goes first, then the back wall, then the body panel the box hangs on.Look behind the box, not just at itPull the batteries and the tray. Push on the floor of the box with a screwdriver. If it dimples or punches through, it's done. Now look at the bus wall behind and below the box. This is the part people miss. The same vapor that ate the box has been working on the body panel for years. Replace the box and leave a rotted panel behind it and you've treated the symptom, not the cause.Make it drain away from the busMost boxes have a drain or an open bottom. Before you bolt the new one on, make sure it drains away from the body, not into it. A box that pools water against the wall will rot the new panel as fast as it rotted the old one.Swapping the box

Disconnect and pull the batteries, ground first, then the tray

Unbolt the box. Expect seized fasteners, so soak them and keep a cutoff wheel handy

Check the panel behind the box, and replace it now if it's bad. You'll never have better access than with the box off

Coat the back of the new box and the mounting area before it goes on

Mount the box, set the tray, reconnect the batteries, ground last
